Sudden cardiac arrest strikes people of all ages. SCA can occur in children, especially during athletic events or impact to the chest. Many schools have installed AED’s and numerous children have been saved during athletic events by the rapid use of an AED. Many professional athletes have been saved during sporting events by an AED. Recently, well respected journalist, Tim Russert, dies while at work from Sudden Cardiac Arrest.
Many cardiologists recommend that their patients with heart disease and those who have suffered a heart attack purchase an AED for their home. Time is the critical factor in the use of an AED. Often, when a person suffers SCA, an emergency response is sometimes delayed because of traffic, other emergencies occurring at the same time, and delays caused by weather. This shock from an AED must be administered in the first seven minutes following sudden cardiac arrest.
